Jeff and Pam Italy / April 24 - May 11, 2012Jeff and Pam Stone are traveling to Italy for a wonderful vacation experience. We will be in Italy for (16) days.
Our journey will begin in Rome where we will spend 3 1/2 days exploring the historical and architectural highlights of this ancient city. A highlight will surely be the day that we spend at the Vatican and viewing such wonders as St. Peter's Basilica while savoring Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling. Not to be missed will be the remnants of the Roman Empire - the Pantheon and the Colosseum.
We will then travel to the countryside of the Tuscany region where we will be staying in a converted castle which dates back to about 1400 A.D. History indicates that Leonardo da Vinci stayed at this castle while painting his masterpiece Mona Lisa. Our (4) days in Tuscany will be highlighted by a bike tour of the countryside while sampling some of the wine from this prolific wine producing region. Pam the "foodie" will be enjoying a cooking class learning techniques and recipes of the region.
We then head north to spend just a few days in Florence. Our time in Florence will be limited to about (2) days so we will focus on such must sees as Michelangelo's world famous sculpture of David. Though we are not art lovers we will spend some time in the Galleria degli Uffizi which houses the world's best collection of Italian Renaissance art.
We then venture north to the coast and spend several days in the World Heritage site of The Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre literally means "Five Lands" and consists of five tiny villages clinging to the cliffs along a gorgeous stretch of the Ligurian coast. For centuries the only means of transportation among the villages was by foot. We will explore the area by foot hiking from village to village while enjoying incredible views down to the villages and off to the sea.
We will spend the next (4) days in the Lake Como area in the town of Bellagio. One of our travel books describes Lake Como as "nirvana consisting of palatial villas, rose-laden belvederes, hanging wisteria, lanterns casting a glow over lakeshore restaurants, and majestic Alpine vistas, heaven is Lake Como". Our budget will only allow us to enjoy this playground for the rich and famous for a few days but we intend to enjoy it to the fullest while we are there. Jeff hopes to rent a classic Italian Fiat for a tour through the Alps which border the lake region to the north.
We complete our trip with just one day in Milan - the fashion capital of the world. We figured that our budget may be getting low by this time so we should limit our time in the shops of world famous designers. Besides an abundance of shopping opportunities in Milan we are looking forward to seeing Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper"
